Mince pies

Fruit, meat and spices were the traditional ingredients for making mince pies years ago. This tradition was followed by the crusaders who learnt it from the countries in the Middle East. They then brought this tradition back to their own country. Thirteen ingredients are required to make mince pies which is actually a representation of Jesus and his 12 apostles. Ever since the Victorian era, meat was replaced by many acceptable ingredients such as dried fruits.

Stockings and Santa Claus

Santa Claus and hanging up stockings is a tradition that dates back to 300 AD in the time of ST Nicholas. St Nicholas, a bishop was famous for helping others, especially poor children and the needy. According to the legend, a man couldn’t afford the dowry for getting his 3 daughters married, but he was helped by St Nicholas. One night, St Nicholas came in and put the money in the girl’s stockings and told their father to never reveal who had given it.
